To Change or Not to Change Locks

When a tenant leaves a landlord is left with the question on whether they should change locks. Specially since tenants often make multiple sets of keys for friends or family. A landlord may choose to change the locks of a property after a new tenant moves in because they may be worried about the overall security of the property. Also, tenants want to be reassured that their new home is safe, and it may be difficult for them to feel comfortable if there is a possibility a past tenant could have a copy of their key.

One of the biggest issues with changing the locks after a tenant leaves is the cost that is incurred. If the landlord can carry out the task himself this will undoubtedly lower general costs. However, the time and effort required to change locks for multiple rental properties is also something the landlord needs to take into consideration.
